Box gutters and parapets

Parapet gutters, valley gutters, hopper heads and outlets lined in lead and detailed so water leaves the building instead of finding a way into it. The part of the roof nobody looks at until the ceiling below it goes.

What is included

Every box gutter, covered

Falls put right, not patched

A gutter that ponds is a gutter that will leak. Falls and outlet positions are corrected with new firrings when the existing ones are wrong rather than lining over the same flat run.

Drips at the right spacing

Long gutter runs are broken into bays with proper drips so the lead can move. Continuous unbroken lining is the classic reason a gutter splits along the sole.

Upstands and cover flashings

Upstands taken high enough up the parapet, chased and wedged into the joint, then covered so wind-driven rain off the sea has nowhere to get behind.

Hopper heads and outlets

Outlets, chutes and hopper heads formed and lead-welded to suit the run, sized for a real downpour rather than an average one.

Rot cut out first

Wet sole boards, decayed bearers and failed timbers get cut out and replaced before new lead goes in. Lining over rot hides the problem for one more winter.

Access planned properly

Parapet work usually means scaffold, edge protection and neighbour access. That gets arranged before the job starts, not on the morning.

Questions

Asked and answered

My parapet gutter leaks every time it rains hard. Is it repairable?

Often, yes. A split at a drip, a failed weld or a blocked outlet is a straightforward repair. What is not worth repairing is a gutter with no falls, no drips and lead that has already cracked in several places, because you will be back to it every winter. Paul will tell you which one you have after looking at it.

How long should a lead box gutter last?

Sixty to a hundred years if it was detailed correctly. Where they fail at twenty or thirty it is nearly always because the bays were made too long, so thermal movement had nowhere to go and the sheet fatigued and split.

Can you line a gutter without taking the roof off?

In most cases yes. Parapet and valley gutters are usually worked on from inside the gutter itself with a few courses of tile or slate lifted at the edges, so the main roof covering stays where it is.

What about hidden valley gutters between two roofs?

Same principle, and they are the ones that do the most damage when they go, because the water runs straight into the middle of the building. They get lined in lead with proper drips and a decent upstand under the tiles either side.

Do you clear and maintain gutters as well as reline them?

Clearing outlets and checking welds is worth doing before autumn every year, and it is cheap next to a ceiling. Ask when you call and Paul will tell you whether the run needs work or just clearing.
