Tile and slate re-roofs

Stripped, checked, felted, battened and re-covered, with the lead details done to the same standard as the specialist work. General roofing done by someone whose flashings and valleys are the best part of the job rather than the afterthought.

What is included

Every re-roof, covered

Stripped and inspected

Once the covering is off you can see what the rafters, wall plates and battens are actually doing. Anything soft gets replaced before the new covering goes on.

Breathable membrane and battens

Modern breathable underlay and treated battens at the correct gauge for the covering, so the roof space stays dry and ventilated.

Slate and tile matched

Natural slate, clay and concrete tile all handled, matched to the building and to whatever the planners will accept in a conservation area.

Lead details included

Valleys, abutments, chimneys and ridges done in lead as part of the re-roof, not subcontracted out and not skimped.

Ventilation sorted

Eaves and ridge ventilation designed in. Sealing an old roof up tight without ventilation is how you get condensation dripping on the loft insulation.

Site kept tidy

Scaffold, waste and deliveries organised, the garden protected and the site cleared at the end of it.

Questions

Asked and answered

How do I know if I need a re-roof or just repairs?

If tiles are slipping in twos and threes after every gale, the battens or the nails are usually going and patching becomes a standing arrangement. If it is one or two slipped slates on an otherwise sound roof, that is a repair. Paul will tell you which one you have and will not sell you a re-roof you do not need.

How long does a re-roof take?

A typical Sussex terrace or semi is usually one to two weeks including scaffold, weather permitting. Bigger or cut-up roofs take longer and you get the programme in writing before it starts.

Do I need planning permission to re-roof?

Normally no, if you are replacing like with like. In a conservation area or on a listed building the covering material can be controlled, and that is common across Brighton, Lewes, Arundel and the other older centres round here. We will flag it before you commit.

Can you re-roof in stages to spread the cost?

On some properties, yes, for example doing one elevation or one roof slope at a time. It costs a little more overall because of the scaffold, but it is better than living under a roof you cannot afford to do in one go.

What happens if it rains halfway through?

The roof is stripped in sections that can be made watertight the same day, and the scaffold carries sheeting for the rest. Nobody strips a whole roof on a Friday and hopes.
